About the project

The project “Livonia Maritima – Riga Gulf Joint Co-operation Region” aims foster common development and to enhance competitiveness of geographical territories located in the coastal areas of the Gulf of Riga according to principles of balanced and sustainable development. The activities of the project were centred to support the development of the Gulf of Riga region as a whole. The EU accession created the need for identifying holistic regions that are functionally connected, but under different administrative borders (different countries).

Today the Gulf of Riga Region lacks common instruments (common strategy and cooperation structures) to ensure socio-economically successful, balanced and sustainable development of the region as a whole. The cooperation experience of Estonian-Latvian borderlands has been weak until now, there is little information available about the development and planning activities, experience in spatial planning, etc.

Thereof the project “Livonia Maritima” is targeted to develop a common strategic platform for development of the region and a mechanism for further sustainable cooperation between region's authorities. The project activities include informing the potential target audiences about the cooperation opportunities and tools that would foster common economic development, marketing the cooperation region and its common strategy as well as developing the common principles for sustainable development of coastal areas around the Gulf of Riga.

“Livonia Maritima” helps to transfer knowledge among the partners concerning environment management and protection, spatial planning on coastal areas and will develop common tourism product and network of the region, called "Livonian Ring". “Livonia Maritima” has 7 partners: Pärnu City Government as Lead Partner, Kuressaare Town Government and Pärnu and Saaremaa Counties’ Governments as partners from Estonian part, Limbaži, Tukums and Talsi District Councils as partners from Latvian part. The project activities last until November 2007.

The project is part financed by the European Union Community Initiative Baltic Sea Region INTERREG III B Neighbourhood Programme.
